on 11/15/11, a gunman was sighted doing a holdup robbery on campus in UNC. students were told to evacuate and find secure locations. text messages, e mails, and even phone calls were sent to to the students to inform them about the robbery. in a similar situation, another gunman was spotted on campus. school officials say their alarm system failed to properly notify the whole campus.

This connect to what i am learning in my s.s. US history class because I am studying about Sir Walter Raleigh, who tried to start a colony off the coast of North Carolina ( Roanoke Island ) The Indians that were there when Raleigh and his crew arrived at Roanoke Island welcomed them and gave the settlers traps for fishing. The settlers were more interested in finding gold though so they left. A second  group was sent too late for growing crops. Their leader, John White, sailed back to England. Unfortunately, fighting broke out between England and Spain so White's return trip to Roanoke was delayed for three years.

This article connects to my life because of the schools i know that has experienced a school shooting or gunman on campus. This has influenced the safety precautions and has increased student and campus safety. Gates, cameras, and even police that walk around the campus are examples of our new safety techniques .

In my own opinion, i think a school shooting is an extremely dangerous matter and our new defence systems have helped a lot. School shootings should decrease because of our new defense. i think we can do even better in protecting our schools be having greater, more advanced technology for protection.
